The children at Shepherd Primary School all loved their morning the Happy Puzzle Company. All the children from reception to year 6 were able to participate and were extremely enthusiastic about their experiences. There was so much enthusiasm and interest from the pupils that after the visit we decided to set up a Maths Puzzle Club. This continues to be one of our most popular after school clubs.

The Puzzle Challenge Day at our school excited and challenged all children, from Reception to Year 6. The main benefits were undoubtedly logic and teamwork skills. In the long-term it will have provided a memorable Maths-based experience which we hope will inform their problem solving skills of the future. The workshop was arranged for More Able pupils who have English as an Additional language to give them an opportunity to problem-solve collaboratively with learners from other schools. The day was a huge success for pupils and staff! The pupils enjoyed the activities, especially the competitive element and teamwork. The staff loved that the learning objectives were achieved and the way pupils were communicating and collaborating with pupils from other schools. ”

The students encounter a variety of fun, but challenging 3D hands-on puzzle tasks, which they have to complete in teams. Most challenges last for no more than a few minutes, but require each team to work together and carefully develop strategies in order to find a solution. The temptation to give up might appear from time to time, but the programme teaches the students how to persevere, put their own skills to better use as part of a team and overcome difficulties by approaching problems from different perspectives. With the advent of the new GCSE curriculum, where a stronger emphasis on problem solving is being placed, we feel this day is an ideal springboard and foundation in Key Stage 3. In addition, our pupils have fun while they learn!
